It was first exported to Germany where a small industry developed based on material mainly from Namibia and Botswana. World demand has risen a lot since in the early 1960s. It is now widely used as herbal medicine in some countries for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In 2001, devil’s claw accounted for 74% of the total number of prescriptions for rheumatism in Germany.
